UKZN Chemistry PhD Candidate Wins Top Award at International Conference

A PhD candidate in the School of Chemistry and Physics on thePMB campus, Mr Daniel Onunga, won an award for an oral presentation he gave at the 9th Kenya Chemical Society International Conference (KCS) in Nairobi

A PhD candidate in the School of Chemistry and Physics on the Pietermaritzburg campus, Mr Daniel Onunga, won an award for an oral presentation he gave at the 9th Kenya Chemical Society International Conference (KCS) in Nairobi.

The KCS Conference is a biannual event that brings together chemical scientists and stakeholders from academia, government, research institutions and industries. This year’s Conference theme was: “The Role of Chemistry in Inventing a Sustainable Future”.

The Conference comprised plenary lectures given by a number of international experts and scientists as well as oral and poster presentations and exhibitions.

The sub-themes included areas such as Applications of Green Chemistry in Manufacturing; Chemometrics and Quality Assurance; Material and Applied Chemistry (Nanoscience & Nanotechnology); Environmental Chemistry; Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Discovery; Petrochemicals and Mineral Exploration; Industrial Chemistry; and Chemical Safety and Security.

Onunga won the award for his presentation titled: “Controlling the Reactivity of Palladium (II) Complexes Using N-donor Ligands: Kinetics and Computational study”. This Prize was jointly awarded by the KCS and African Network of Analytical Chemists (SEANAC).

Onunga said it was ‘a great humbling feeling’ to have his work receive recognition as well as winning such an important award. ‘This award has motivated me to improve my research outputs.’
